2025 New Years Resolutions

We want to wish all of our Latitude family around the world a very happy holiday season and a fabulous new year! We’ve had a little think of a short list we want to share with you on a fews things we can do for a happy and healthful 2025.

Reduce Single Use Plastics

We know plastics are one of the biggest ocean pollutants out there, and we can all do a bit better to reduce our consumption to put less plastics out there in the world. We aim to have as little as possible on our adventures, but we can still do a bit better. Reusable water bottles, bar soaps, bulk shopping with reusable containers and shopping bags, dining in versus taking away, are all things we can work to incorporate into our lives to reduce plastic waste. And for the plastics we do use, responsibly recycling or reusing them as best we can to make the planet and the oceans a little cleaner.

Take More ID Shots

We always strive to contribute to our scientific community, and taking ID shots of cetaceans is a big way we can do this. Particularly for every encounter with Orcas, it’s becoming increasingly important to get good ID photos of the eye and saddle patches and dorsal fins of Baja’s Killer Whales so we can better understand their behaviors and migration patterns. We can also pay closer attention and try to capture the flukes of the Humpback Whale every time they dive, and utilizing resources like HappyWhale.com, have a look at where they’ve been and where they may go from here. Not only do ID shots help cetacean researchers, it also enriches your whale watching or safari to have a little deeper understanding of the animal’s profound life experience.

Slow Down for Wildlife

We all need to just slow down a little bit sometimes, and we know particularly out on the ocean simply reducing speed can have a massive impact positively on wildlife. Not only can we help reduce boat strikes, but simply slowing down a bit can reduce noise pollution for our whale and dolphin friends. If a ship slows down by 20%, from 18 knots to 14 knots for example, the noise they produce can be lowered by 6 whole decibels; a 75% reduction in the acoustic footprint. This allows more space for cetacean communication, a fundamental part of their social and reproductive behaviors.

Take Time for Nature No Matter Where in the World

Nature is all around us, even in the heart of the world’s largest cities, we just have to stop and observe once and while to find the connection. There are birds, small mammals, insects and plant life in every corner of the planet, and we hope this year that you’ll join us to be grateful, observant, and considerate of nature in these subtler forms all around us. Start a bird list, spend time in green spaces, go to the beach in winter, all to bolster a deeper connection to the natural world.

Book your Dream Trip!

Part of our ethos at Latitude in helping make dream encounters come to be, and we strive to offer the best itineraries and experiences to make that happen. If it’s with us in Mexico or Dominica, or anywhere else in the world, we hope you take steps to making those dreams come true, and we are here for you every step of the way.

Whatever you celebrate and whatever your goals are for the new year, we wish you all the best in the world in achieving them! Thank you for being part of the Latitude extended family and have a happy and healthy holiday and new year!
