Turtles of Baja California

Sea turtles are one of the oldest animal species on the planet

These reptiles inhabit tropical and subtropical seas around the world. Five species of Sea Turtles can be seen in Baja California, the most common being the Olive Ridley Turtle, known locally as Golfina. 

The Olive Ridley is the smallest of the sea turtles and weighs on average only 50 kilos, preferring the solitude of the open ocean. The Green, Logger head and Hawksbill Turtles are more commonly found in the warmer and shallower coastal waters so we rarely come across them on our trips. The Leatherback Turtle, known for its soft shell, is the largest of the species weighing over 900 kilos. This is the rarest to find in the wild. 

The Olive Ridley and Leatherback Turtles nest on the beaches of Baja California Sur, bringing a special magic to our coasts every summer. They are an important part of Baja California's marine environment as well as local culture.

Unfortunately, turtles have many threats from humans.  Coastal developments can destroy their nesting grounds, poaching and becoming by-catch from unsustainable fishing practices. These vulnerable creatures have the odds stacked against them.

We have created this incredible adventure for you to witness turtles in their natural environment, and be a part of their population growth and protection. 

What’s the day like

The trip will start with a briefing about the local Olive Ridley turtles biology and behavior. As we come out of the bay into open ocean we will search for the turtles sunning on the surface of the water, and if we are lucky, find a mating pair. The approach must always be slow and quite in order not to startle them and to hopefully be able to get in the water with them. 

After the marine safari on the boat we will drive to a beautiful beach where we will have a picnic and relax. A local turtle specialist will give a presentation about the turtle nests, then we will have the opportunity to release hatchlings to start their life journey in the ocean.
